Re: Va apologizes for slavery...
If you got such a problem living in a "conquered nation" within the USA...please move...somewhere preferably like Venzeuela or Russia...so you can learn to appreciate what it is to live here...And remember, at one point your ancestors didn't live here either...pitiful.

Re: Va apologizes for slavery...
Wow
Just wow
So, because some racists in the South say that the history books are written about a corrupt North, we are to believe them?
Sorry there are 3 sides to every story, in this one, there is the Northern view, the Southern view and the truth, which is probably closer to the Northern view IMO. Why is it closer to the Nothern view? Because more of the people in the North that told the history, were educated (many educated in Southern states, so don't try to say that it was a corrupt Northern education system). Most of the Southern were uneducated. The North did many of the things you accuse the South of doing, absolutely. So the Southern people did nothing and waved howdy at the Northern? Heck no, the South was doing the same thing back to the North.
Nothing wrong with being proud of a Confederate lifestyle. Nothing wrong with having the Stars and Bars. Its part of our history and has as much right being shown as does wearing a shirt that says Malcolm X.
Were they idiots who went to far in the Confederate States? Absolutely, sorry the KK-K was stupid as was the Black Panters.

Re: Va apologizes for slavery...
Let's take a quick look at what actually happened. Around 1820 the United States, which had up until then a mostly farm or agriculture based economy begin to urbanize and shift to a manufacturing based economy. At least in the northern states.
Some of the workers in this new movement had it little better than the slaves who were depended upon by the southern cotton based economy. As time went on many northerners begin to question this southern slave based economy while usually ignoring the deplorable conditions that many of the northern manufacturing giants put their workers in (this often included child labor).
Most northerners did not oppose slavery on moral grounds. This is evident by the written record left behind. Even Abraham Lincoln wrote about the "inferiority" of the black race. In many cases this was nothing but a money issue, greed if you will.
It actually probably cost the southern plantation owners more to maintain their slaves than the northern industrial giants were paying their workers. However, the system was in place and change would be expensive and time costly as well.
In the end the war was fought over money just like so many wars. Follow the money trail to the source.........
I don't really agree with the education point brought up in an earlier post.
In fact logic would dictate that education would result in more written history but not necessarily a more honest history. Education does not make one honest. In fact I think it's now pretty much universally agreed among historians that an alternate history was forced on the nation.
The northern policy of rape and burn did exist and was carried out in many areas. In fact our ancestors narrowly escaped that fate which may have resulted in few if any of us being here discussing this had it not been for successful defense of the Pound Gap.
All this still does nothing to condone one person owning another person.
As I posted earlier, there are currently about 27 million slaves in the world. More than at any other time in history. We don't hear much about that do we? It's just as wrong now in Africa, South America, and Indonesia as it was in 1863 in America.

I had refrained from getting to invovled in this thread since my one comment:

This had not racial inferences to it, I just feel that it is assinine to appologize or even mention any kind of reperations and such for something that has been a dead issue for 100+ years. Blacks have every and more opportunities (than whites) to advance themselves and make themselves better people and have a better way of life, if they don't want to take advantage of it it is their own fault (look at how easy it is for blacks to get into and pay for college) and stuff like this just further propogates the race baiters and gives them ammo to justify their existence when it is them that keeps racial issues alive and promote them, just look at Sharpton and Jesse Jackson someone needs to just step on these two.
